About the Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences was established in 1963 and has grown into one of the leading academic and research centers in pharmacological sciences in Iran. The department plays a central role in medical education and interdisciplinary research within the university.

The Ph.D. program in Pharmacology was launched in 1990—the first of its kind in the country—and continues to admit students annually, including international candidates. The department provides comprehensive instruction in both basic and clinical pharmacology, and actively participates in clinical training, including prescription writing workshops for medical interns.

The department is equipped with advanced research laboratories, including facilities for chromatography, behavioral studies, molecular biology (PCR), cell culture, immunohistochemistry, and biochemical analysis. Research activities focus on areas such as pain and inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease), epilepsy, cerebral ischemia, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and cellular and molecular pharmacology.

In addition to medical students, the department provides education to students in dentistry, pharmacy-related fields, nutrition, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, parasitology, nanomedicine, epidemiology, physiology, nursing, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, public health, and other allied health sciences.

The Department of Pharmacology remains committed to excellence in education, innovation in research, and the advancement of pharmacological sciences at national and international levels.
